Yesterday I talked with a patient who was on 3 injections a day along with an oral medication for her diabetes. She states she was overweight as well and decided to have gastric bypass here in Worcester Massachusetts. During that experience she reduced her foot consumption and was able to stop taking all of her diabetes medication. She is now controlling her diabetes with only her diet. I was very impressed with this use of gastric bypass surgery to help fight diabetes and the consequences of diabetes. Will this become the next standard of care of diabetic patients to reduce the risks of diabetes including retinopathy, neuropathy and amputation?
